Mindbug: First Contact rules – how to play and how to win
Reviewed on 16 October 2026 against the publisher’s rulebook. How we check
Mindbug is a card duel for 2 players (4 with the Tag Team expansion): you summon hybrid creatures, but your opponent may take them with their Mindbugs. Here are the essential rules, setup and how to win, based on the official rules, which apply to every box in the line.
- Players
- 2 (4 in teams with Tag Team)
- Play time
- About 20 minutes
- Winner
- The first to reduce the opponent’s life to zero
Mindbug: First Contact quick rules
- The goal
- You summon creatures and send them to battle your opponent’s creatures. Each player starts with 3 life, and you win immediately when your opponent’s life reaches zero. But when you summon a creature, they may use one of their Mindbugs to take control of it.
- Cards in hand
- Whenever you have fewer than 5 cards in hand, draw back up to 5, before any other effect. When your draw pile is empty, you no longer draw, and you never reshuffle your discard pile.
- Taking turns
- On your turn, you take a single turn action: play a card from your hand, or attack with one of your creatures. If you can do neither, you lose immediately.
- Playing a card and Mindbugs
- Place your card face up and show it. If your opponent uses one of their two Mindbugs, they take the creature and resolve its Play effect; you must then take another turn action this same turn. Otherwise, the creature is yours and you resolve its Play effect.
- What a Mindbug cannot do
- A Mindbug only takes a card played from the hand: never a creature already in play, a creature put into play by an effect, or a creature already mindbugged.
- Attacking and blocking
- You attack with one creature; your opponent may block with one of theirs. Without a block, they lose 1 life. With a block, the creature with lower power is defeated; with equal power, both are.
- Keywords
- HUNTER chooses the creature that must block it. TOUGH is exhausted instead of defeated, once. FRENZY attacks twice each turn. SNEAKY can only be blocked by a sneaky creature. POISONOUS always defeats the creature it fights. FAST, in some boxes, attacks the turn it arrives.
- Triggers
- Play: when it comes into play. Attack: when the creature attacks, before blocking. Defeated: when it goes to the discard pile. An ability without a trigger is constant. Effects resolve as much as possible, and the active player orders simultaneous effects.
- Beginner pitfalls
- Before playing a big creature, ask yourself what happens if it’s taken. Show your card clearly, save your Mindbugs for the right moment, and remember your extra action when a creature is taken from you.
- Tag Team, four players
- With the Tag Team expansion, you play two against two, and each team shares 3 life. Each player has a Mindbug, a Mindfrog to take a card played by their teammate, and 3 cards in hand. The opponents on your left then right may block; if both players of a team can’t act one after the other, the team loses.
How to win Mindbug: First Contact
- No points
- You win immediately when your opponent’s life reaches zero. There is no maximum life.
- Unable to act
- A player who can neither play a card nor attack loses immediately. With Tag Team, they skip their turn, but the team loses if their teammate also can’t act right after.
- Team play
- With Tag Team, the team that reduces the opposing team’s shared life to zero wins.
- Remaining life and how you won
- For the record, optional: they don’t change the winner.
Example ending
Jake has one life left. On her turn, Emma plays a creature; Jake takes it with his last Mindbug. Emma must take another turn action this same turn: she attacks with her SNEAKY creature. None of Jake’s creatures is sneaky, so he can’t block and drops to zero: Emma wins.
Common mistakes
- Passing the turn after a creature is taken: the player who lost it takes another action this same turn.
- Reshuffling your discard pile when your draw pile is empty: you keep playing without drawing.
- Forgetting that a player with no possible action loses immediately.
