Omens rules: how to play and how to win
Reviewed on 13 October 2026 against the publisher’s rulebook. How we check
Omens plays 4 to 6 players, in teams and without communicating: your team must get rid of its cards before the others. There are no points: the first team to win two rounds wins. Here are the essential rules and setup, based on the official rulebook.
- Players
- 4 to 6, in teams
- Play time
- About 30 minutes
- Winner
- The first team to win 2 rounds
Omens quick rules
- The goal
- At the end of a bout, if a player has only one card left in hand, their whole team wins the round; the first team to win two rounds wins. The game holds 35 Arcane cards, valued 1 to 35, each with a color and an effect. The six highest, from 30 to 35, are all called The Absolute.
- A bout
- In each bout, everyone plays one card. The first player places the card of their choice in front of them, face-up, then everyone does the same clockwise, announcing its effect. An immediate effect, marked with a lightning bolt, resolves right away. An end of bout effect, marked with an hourglass, waits until everyone has played.
- The end of the bout
- You determine who wins the bout and resolve all end of bout effects, at the same time. The highest card wins the bout, unless an effect says otherwise, and it’s discarded; effects may discard others. A discarded card still applies its end of bout effect. Everyone takes their card back into their hand if it wasn’t discarded, and the bout’s winner starts the next one.
- The effects
- You must always apply a card’s effect; if it can’t be applied, the card is played without effect. Many effects are about colors “in play,” the cards in front of the players, and can discard a teammate’s card as well as an opponent’s. The Absolute cards swap a card from your hand with the player of your choice. With Mirror, the lowest card wins; with Sadness, the second-highest; Fear is only discarded if it wins the bout.
- The end of the round
- If a player has only one card in hand at the end of a bout, their team wins the round; if several do, the highest card in hand wins. The winning team turns its Player Aid cards to the laurel side. For a new round, shuffle all the cards: with 4 players, five cards each; with 5, five for the three-player team and four for the two-player team; with 6, four each.
- No communication
- Omens is a team game, but without communication: you may not say how to play, or give information about your hand. Only a card effect can allow it: Secret has you show a card to a player, or look at one of theirs.
- Beginner traps
- Trying to empty your hand: the goal is to get down to one card, not zero. Thinking only the bout’s winner discards: end of bout effects often discard others. Forgetting to announce your effect, or treating it as optional: it always applies, even if it hurts your team. And check the colors already in play before choosing your card.
How to win Omens
- No points
- There are no points: you count the rounds won by each team.
- Winning a round
- At the end of a bout, if a player has only one card left in hand, their whole team wins the round.
- Several players with one card
- Compare the cards they hold: the highest wins the round for their team.
- Winning the game
- The first team to win 2 rounds wins: all its players win together.
Example ending
With 4 players, Emma (35) teams up with Mia (30), against Jake and Alex. Round 1: Jake ends a bout with one card, so his team leads 1–0. Round 2: Emma and Alex are both down to one card, a 28 against a 12: Emma’s team ties it up. Round 3: Mia gets down to one card, and Emma and Mia win 2 rounds to 1.
Common mistakes
- Aiming for zero cards: a round is won with exactly one card in hand at the end of a bout.
- Checking hands mid-bout: you only check at the end of the bout, once effects are resolved.
- Breaking the tie at random when several players have one card: the highest card in hand wins.
- Forgetting a teammate: the whole team wins, even the player who still had several cards.
How to set up Omens
The Absolute cards form the teams, and hand size depends on the player count. The player who received the highest The Absolute card goes first.
The teams
- Take the 6 The Absolute cards, values 30 to 35, out of the Arcane cards and shuffle them.
- Give one The Absolute card, face-up, to each player.
- With 4 or 5 players, return the undealt The Absolute cards to the box. They won’t be used during this game.
- With 4 players, the highest The Absolute card teams up with the lowest one; the other 2 players form the opposing team.
- With 5 players, the highest The Absolute card teams up with the lowest one; the other 3 players form the opposing team.
- With 6 players, form 3 teams of 2: the 30 with the 35, the 31 with the 34, the 32 with the 33.
- Give each player a Player Aid card showing their team symbol, laurel-side down.Teammates take the same symbol. The laurel side will show that a team has won a round.
- With 5 players, the team of 3 takes the Player Aid cards of the symbol that comes in 3 copies.
The cards
- Everyone puts their The Absolute card in their hand.
- Shuffle the remaining Arcane cards.
