Trio rules: how to play and how to win
Reviewed on 13 October 2026 against the publisher’s rulebook. How we check
Trio plays 3 to 6 players: a memory and deduction game where you track down three matching cards, in players’ hands or in the middle of the table. Here are the essential rules, setup and victory conditions, based on the official rulebook.
- Players
- 3 to 6 (teams with 4 or 6)
- Play time
- About 15 minutes
- Winner
- 3 trios (Simple), 2 connected trios (Spicy), or the 7 trio
Trio quick rules
- The goal
- The deck has 36 cards: numbers 1 to 12, three copies of each. A trio is all three cards of one number, and your goal is to win trios before the others. Some cards are in players’ hands, the rest are hidden in the middle: it’s up to you to find where the three matching cards are.
- Simple or Spicy
- In Simple mode, you win with any three trios. In Spicy mode, two trios are enough, but they must be connected: two numbers are connected when their sum or difference is 7, and a card’s connected numbers are printed in its bottom corners. So 2 is connected to 5 and 9. In both modes, the 7 trio wins at once.
- Your turn
- Keep your hand sorted from lowest to highest, without showing it. On your turn, reveal cards one at a time to gather three matching numbers: any card in the middle, or the lowest or highest number in a player’s hand, yours included. Never a card from the middle of a hand. You can repeat the same action, like asking the same player for their highest number twice.
- The end of the turn
- If a revealed number differs from the previous one, your turn ends at once and every revealed card goes back, face down in the middle or into its owner’s hand. If you reveal three matching numbers, you win the trio and place it face up in front of you. Either way, the next player goes: winning a trio doesn’t give you another turn.
- The end of the game
- The game ends as soon as a player meets a victory condition: three trios in Simple mode, two connected trios in Spicy mode, or the 7 trio in either mode. There are no points to count.
- Team play
- With 4 or 6 players only, you can play in teams of two, partners sitting opposite each other. All the cards are dealt: none in the middle. After sorting their hands, partners may swap one card, secretly and at the same time: it’s their only way to communicate. Each time a team wins a trio, the opposing teams may swap again.
- Beginner traps
- A trio in hand isn’t won: each card must be revealed while it’s your lowest or highest number, the 7 trio included. After two different numbers, your turn is over, even if you know where the others are. A player with two copies of their highest number shows only one per request. And you can win a trio without any card from your hand.
How to win Trio
- No points
- Trio has no points: the first player, or team, to meet a victory condition wins.
- Simple mode
- Any three trios.
- Spicy mode
- Two connected trios: the sum or difference of their numbers is 7.
- The 7 trio
- It wins the game at once, in both modes. The Ludingo sheet records, for the story, how the game was won; in teams, both partners win.
Example ending
In Spicy mode, Emma has already won the 3 trio. She then reveals all three 10s: 10 − 3 = 7, so the two trios are connected, and Emma wins. With the 4 trio instead, 4 + 3 = 7: they’d be connected too.
Common mistakes
- In Spicy mode, counting two trios that aren’t connected: their sum or difference must be 7.
- Forgetting the 7 trio: it wins at once, in both modes.
- Thinking a trio in hand counts: you must reveal it card by card, like any other.
- In teams, not pooling both partners’ trios: they count together.
How to set up Trio
Setup takes a minute. The number of cards in hand and in the middle depends on the player count, and on team play with 4 or 6.
The game mode
- Choose Simple or Spicy mode.Simple: any 3 trios to win. Spicy: 2 connected trios. In both modes, the 7 trio always wins the game.
- With 4 or 6 players, decide whether you play individually or in teams of two.In teams, partners sit opposite each other, not side by side.
The cards
- Shuffle the 36 cards.
- Deal the cards face down: 9 each with 3 players, 7 with 4, 6 with 5, 5 with 6.In teams, all the cards are dealt: 9 each with 4 players, 6 each with 6.
- Put the remaining cards face down in the middle of the table, next to each other.9 cards with 3 players, 8 with 4, 6 with 5 or 6. In teams, no cards go in the middle.
Each player
- Pick up your cards without showing them to anyone.
- Sort your hand from lowest to highest number. The order matters: in a hand, only the lowest and highest numbers can be revealed.
- In teams, with 4 or 6 players, you may swap one card with your partner. Each of you secretly picks a card; you exchange them face down at the same time, then put the card you received in its place.
Let’s go
- The first player starts, then play goes clockwise.According to the rules, it’s the player who ate avocado most recently.
