- Play time
- About 2 hours
- Winner

Great Western Trail quick rules
- The goal
- You are a cattle rancher in the Old West. You lead your herd along a trail to Kansas City, where you sell your cattle and deliver them by train to a city. Along the way, you hire workers, place buildings, buy cattle and move your engine forward. All points are scored at the end.
- Your herd
- Your herd is your deck of cattle cards: 14 low-value cards to start, a hand of 4 cards at first, a face-up discard pile. Cards you acquire go onto your discard pile, which you only reshuffle when your draw stack is empty.
- A turn
- Each turn has three phases: move your herder, use the location where it stops, then draw up to your hand limit.
- Moving
- Your herder moves at least one location and no more than your step limit; empty spaces don’t count, and it must stop at Kansas City. Passing a green or black hand costs a fee, paid to the bank or to the building’s owner; if you’re short, pay what you can.
- Using a location
- On a neutral building or one of your own, perform its local actions, each once, or one single auxiliary action from your player board. Elsewhere, only one auxiliary action. Requirements are always met in full.
- The main actions
- Hire cowboys, builders and engineers; buy cattle; place your buildings, at 2 Dollars per required builder; move your engine and upgrade train stations; remove hazards, collect bounty for outlaws, gain objective cards.
- Kansas City
- Move three foresight tiles, then take your income: the breeding value of each different cattle type in your hand, once per type, plus your certificates. Then deliver by placing a disc on a city of equal or lower value, never the same one twice except Kansas City and New York, and pay transport costs if your engine is behind. Then your herder goes back to the start.
- End of the game
- When the job market token leaves the bottom row, that player takes it and finishes their turn; each other player then takes one final turn.
- Beginner pitfalls
- In Kansas City, different cattle types are what count. Keep your engine ahead to deliver far without costs. Delivering to Kansas City gives 4 Dollars but costs 6 points at the end. And hire workers: they unlock your best actions.
How to score Great Western Trail
- Dollars
- 1 victory point for every 5 Dollars.
- Private buildings
- The points printed on each of your placed buildings.
- City crests
- The points of the cities where you have a disc, including those in green arrows between two cities you delivered to; each disc in Kansas City loses 6 points.
- Train stations
- The points printed next to each train station with your disc.
- Hazard tiles
- The points printed on your hazard tiles; outlaws score nothing here.
- Cattle cards
- The points of the cattle cards in your whole deck: draw stack, hand and discard pile.
- Objective cards
- Entirely fulfilled: their points; otherwise, their penalty.
- Station master tasks
- The points from the task of each of your station master tiles.
- Workers on 5th or 6th space
- 4 points per worker on the fifth or sixth space of a row.
- 3-point disc space
- 3 points if you cleared that space on your player board.
- Job market token
- 2 points for the player who moved it out.
Worked example
Emma has 23 Dollars (4 points), 18 points of buildings, 12 of cities after one disc in Kansas City, 9 of stations, 7 of hazards, 14 of cattle, 6 of objectives, 6 of station masters, 2 workers on a 5th space (8 points) and the disc space (3 points): 4 + 18 + 12 + 9 + 7 + 14 + 6 + 6 + 8 + 3 = 87 points.
Common mistakes
- Scoring 4 points for the disc space: it’s worth 3.
- Forgetting the −6 points for each disc delivered to Kansas City.
- Counting only your discard pile for cattle: your whole deck counts, hand and draw stack included.
- Counting outlaw tiles: they only score through station master tasks.
How to set up Great Western Trail
Setup takes about fifteen minutes. The number of cattle cards in the market depends on the player count.
The game board
- Place the game board in the middle of the table.
- Place a random station master tile face up onto each of the 5 station master spaces.Return the other 4 to the box.

The tiles

- Draw 7 tiles with a 1 on their back and place them along the trail. Each outlaw or hazard goes into its section, onto the empty space with the lowest number.
- Draw tiles with a 2, all workers, to fill the job market up to the space left of the token.3 workers with 2 players, 5 with 3 players, 7 with 4 players.
- Fill the 6 foresight spaces in Kansas City: 2 tiles with a 1, 2 with a 2, 2 with a 3.
The cards

- Reveal the cattle market, sorted by color.7 cards with 2 players, 10 with 3 players, 13 with 4 players.

- Place the coins and exchange tokens as the bank.
Each player
- Each player takes their color’s components: player board, 12 private buildings, 14 discs, engine, certificate marker, herder.
- With 2 or 3 players, each player covers Phase A of their board with their player count tile.
- Each player displays their buildings above their board, side a up, and covers the colored disc spaces with discs.Only the 2 gray spaces stay empty.
- Each player places their engine on the start of the railroad track and their certificate marker next to the 0.
- Each player shuffles their 14 starting cattle cards as a draw stack and gets a starting objective card.
- Each player receives 1 exchange token, money and cards according to turn order.1st player: 6 Dollars and 4 cards; then 7 and 5, 8 and 6, 9 and 7.
