Behind rules: how to play and how to win

Reviewed on 15 October 2026 against the publisher’s rulebook. How we check

Behind plays from 1 player, ideally 2, all together: you rebuild a scene by assembling its tiles, never flipping them before the end. Here are the essential rules, setup and how to tell if you succeeded, based on the official rules.

Players
From 1, ideally 2, cooperative
Play time
45 to 90 minutes per scene
Winner
The whole table, if the picture on the back is right

Behind quick rules

The goal
Behind is a cooperative deduction game. Together, you rebuild a scene by assembling its tiles. You only play with the front: you analyze the tiles, assemble them logically, and only at the very end do you flip them to admire the picture on the back.
Assembling the tiles
All the tiles form a rectangle, and there is only one possible layout. Matching text and drawings helps a little, but above all you must understand the scene’s logic. The compartment’s briefing gives very useful information, and every detail on the tiles matters.
Clue cards
Each scene has 6 clue cards, face down. They are read in numerical order; if a clue doesn’t help, read the next one right away. A clue never gives the solution, it sheds light on the logic. Stuck for more than 10 minutes? Read one.
End of the game
Once all the tiles are assembled, read the clue cards one by one to check. Then flip the tiles one by one, sideways: if the picture on the back has inconsistencies, the scene was not rebuilt correctly.
Beginner traps
Never flip a tile before the end: everything happens on the front. Don’t just match the drawings, the key is each scene’s own logic. And only open one compartment at a time.

How to win Behind

No score
Behind has no points: just the satisfaction of rebuilding the scene, all together.
Solved
Once the tiles are assembled and flipped sideways, the picture on the back is consistent.
Not solved
The picture on the back shows inconsistencies: the scene was not rebuilt correctly. The rules have no other way to lose and no time limit.
Clues
Six per scene, read in order. The Ludingo sheet records the scene played, whether you solved it, and how many clues you read.

Example ending

Emma and Jake open the Imhotep compartment and assemble its 70 tiles. Stuck for a good quarter of an hour, they read clue 1, then clue 2, which unlocks everything. At the end, they read all 6 clues to check and flip the tiles: the picture is consistent. Scene solved, with 2 clues.

Common mistakes

  • Flipping a tile to “check” during the game: you only play with the front.
  • Skipping a clue: they are always read in order.
  • Flipping the tiles any old way at the end: the rules ask you to flip them sideways, one by one.
  • Forgetting to read the clues at the end: they confirm your reasoning before you flip the tiles.

How to set up Behind

Setup takes a minute: one scene per game, out of the three in the box.

The scene

  1. Choose one of the box’s 3 compartments. The Theft (56 tiles), The Professor (54 tiles) or Imhotep (70 tiles).
  2. Take out all the compartment’s tiles, without flipping them.
  3. Spread them on the table, within everyone’s reach, and mix them without flipping them.
  4. Place the 6 clue cards face down, within reach. They are read in numerical order.

The briefing

  1. Read the briefing printed on the compartment flap very carefully. It contains very useful information.
